How has the internet changed our lives?
Before The Internet
Shopping- Before The internet people would have to travel to stores to collect their shopping.
Writing Letters- Before the internet people used to write letters to contact friends/family/ professionals.
Banking- People used to have to go to their bank to put money in their bank, transfer money to others, any other needs.
Accessing Information- People used to access books, magazines, go to an information centre to access sources of information.
Spelling- If people needed help with spellings then they would ask somebody they knew for help or access a dictionary to find the right spelling.
Accessing Jobs- People would access the job centre/ read the newspaper to see if their was any job advertisements/ or go to a local shop window to see if there was any advertisement's.
Homework- children's homework would be completed using paper and pencils and would rely on their parents knowledge to help them if needed.
After The Internet
Online Shopping- Now people can access online stores that are close or far away to order their shopping to either collect or get sent to your door.
Apps in place There are now many apps to help meet everybody's needs. The most common need that it helps meet is having apps in place such as twitter, Facebook, snapchat to communicate with family and friends.
Online Banking- People can now access their banks online and it has made things much easier when your always on the go as you can transfer or receive money from others with just a click of a button.
Can look on the Internet- You can now search any information you need to know on the internet instead of hours reading books, journals, articles.
Spell Check System- Instead of children/adults once getting out a dictionary to fin out the correct spelling, spell check and the internet dictionary can now find out the correct spellings in minutes.
Job Seeking System-There is now a Job seeking system that you can access online instead of attending the job centre weekly.
Apps in place for homework-There are now many apps/ websites online which homework is set for children. Some examples include; my maths and BBC bitesize.
Overall Impact
- Research has demonstrated from (Lufkin, 2020) that more people are using the internet for their shopping as sales that were completed online in 2006 was a total of 2.8% and has increased to 18.9% in 2020.
- Apps and smartphones now being in place makes communicating with others allot easier . Swamy (2020) agrees with this and states that people now communicate using e- conference calls, video chats and phone interviews are now more common due to the speed of e- communications.
- Campbell (2019) refers to the fact that the overall impact on banking now being online is it is quick and easy to access and use however this could lead to individuals such as the elderly that don't not how to access the internet.
- Diomidours, Chardalias, Magita, Koutonias, Panagiotopoulou and Mantas (2016), refers to the fact that some information that can be found on the internet may be fake or unreliable whereas accessing information from books are more likely to be more academic.
- Bakken (2014) argues that spell check on technology such as mobile phones and laptops has had an poor effect on children's spelling and grammar skills, this is due to children depending on their phones/technology for the correct spelling.
- Smith (2015) refers to the fact that searching and applying for jobs online has become more important in the last few years. Research has demonstrated that 54% have gone online to access and look at information about different jobs that may suit them and 45% have applied for a job online.
- The Internet has benefited children's leaning massively when it comes to finding out information for homework or everyday life, however alongside finding this information could lead to disadvantages including, correct and incorrect information findings ( Simpson, 2018).
